OUR CRAFT ARCHIVE

MACHILIPATNAM KALAMKARI

MachIlipatnam Kalamkari is a centuries-old textile art form originating from the coastal town of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India. Known for its intricate motifs, rich detailing, and handcrafted beauty, this craft reflects a legacy passed down through generations of skilled artisans.

Unlike printed textiles produced through industrial methods, Machhalipatnam Kalamkari involves a labor-intensive process that combines hand-carved wooden blocks, natural dyes, and multiple stages of washing, dyeing, and detailing. Each piece undergoes approximately 20–22 steps before reaching its final form.

Traditionally inspired by nature, architecture, florals, and cultural narratives, the craft is celebrated for its distinctive patterns and earthy colour palette. Every motif carries the touch of the artisan, making each textile unique.

At Qalasiti, we work closely with artisan communities in Andhra Pradesh to bring this heritage craft into contemporary silhouettes. By integrating Machilipatnam Kalamkari into modern wardrobes, we aim to preserve traditional craftsmanship while creating garments that are relevant, wearable, and timeless.
